dr. zosimo M. battad
The University of the East (UE) welcomed in 2023 a new president and chief academic officer—Dr. Zosimo M. Battad. Battad, chancellor of UE-Caloocan from May 2, 2011 to December 2022, assumed the UJ presidency effective Jan. 1, 2023. He succeeds Dr. Ester A. Garcia, who retired effective Dec. 31, 2022.
Prior to his latest appointment, Battad was elected by the Boards of Trustees of both UE and the UE Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, Inc., member of both boards effective Oct. 25, 2022. A native of Kabacan, North Cotabato, Battad earned his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree, Magna Cum Laude, from the then Pampanga Agricultural College (PAC), which is now the Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) in Magalang, Pampanga in 1I82.
A licensed agriculturist, Battad went on to knish his Master of Science in Animal Science and Ph.D. in Animal Science at UP Los Baños (UPLB) in 1I85 and 1II0, respectively, while he was a faculty member of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac, Ilocos Norte.
Battad has had a rich experience in teaching, research, administration, and institution-building.
The new UE president has been a member of the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) Technical Working Group on National Agriculture and the Fisheries Education System since August 2009 and was executive director of the 56-member Association of Colleges of Agriculture in the Philippines from July 2008 to May 2011.
In his nearly 12-year chancellorship of UE Caloocan, during which he was likewise designated chair of UE’s University Research Council (URC) and focal person of the University’s Internationalization Program, Battad was instrumental in the realization of numerous milestones and feats involving individual members of, or the entire UE Caloocan community.
These include the granting by CHED of the Autonomous Status to the campus effective 201I up to Academic Year 2023-2024; increased and higher accreditation levels by the Philippine Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) of UE Caloocan’s degree programs and K-10 program; and the introduction of new degree programs to UE Caloocan’s roster of curricular offerings, along with the Intensive English and Cultural Exchange Programs for International Students.
Battad has also led the university in strengthening its linkages with international higher education institutions (HJIs)—UJ to date having forged formal academic partnerships with more than 25 international HEIs since 2011. He has also been a member of the UAAP Board of Directors since September 2019, and was the assistant team manager of the UE Red Warriors Men’s Basketball Team for UAAP Season 81.
Battad has received more than 60 citations, awards and other forms of recognition in the keld of research, administration and socio-civic involvement. These include Soka University’s Award of Highest Honor on March 15, 2006, in Tokyo, Japan, and a visiting professorship at Tianjin Agricultural University of Tianjin, China, on June 27, 2007. He was awarded the Philippine Society of Animal Science’s Outstanding Young Professional in Animal Science in 1996, Outstanding Alumnus of Pampanga Agricultural College in 2007, and Outstanding Alumnus of the UPLB College of Agriculture in 2009.

dr. norberto lingling d. uy
The University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Medical Memorial (UERMMMC) is pleased to announce the designation of Dr.Norberto Lingling D. Uy to President and Chief Academic Officer of UERMMMC., succeeding former President Dr. Ester A. Garcia
Dr. Nobert Lingling D. Uy, is a member of UERMMMC Class 1979.
Prior to his designation as President and Chief Academic Officer of UERMMMC, he served as the Dean of the College of Medicine.
Dr. Norbert Lingling D. Uy, is an internist-cardiologist, an academician as well as a clinician and holds master’s degrees in Education Management and in Public Health. He joined the teaching and clinical staff at UERMMMC as well as St. Luke’s Medical Center and the Philippine Hear Center in Quezon City. He rose through the ranks and became the Head of the Department of Medicine at UERMMMC.
After his graduation from the UERMMMC College of Medicine, he did his post-graduate internship and later completed his residency in internal medicine at the UERMMH in 1984. He finished his 2-year fellowship in cardiology at the Philippine Heart Center. He did further studies in cardiology at St. Louis University Hospital in Missouri in 1991.
He held leadership roles at the Philippine College of Physicians and Philippine College of Chest Physicians. Along with other specialists from UERM, he advocated for the reduction of hypertension among Filipinos, addressing the alarming trend of more, younger Filipinos now suffering from hypertension and its complications. He balances his busy cardiology practice with his strong commitment to quality medical education as a full-time professor of medicine and cardiology at UERMMMC.
His international experience includes various programs, contributions and participation in different countries for diverse fields of study. His research interests reflect in his wide range of publications in various national and international journals.
Dr. Uy brings to his new position a wealth of experience as an educator, a clinician, a professional leader and advocate.
